Venice Carnival 2013: Vivi i Colori – Live in Color
Dates are: 26th Jan. 2013 – 12nd Feb. 2013
The Carnival of the colours, the colours of the Carnival.
Venice is the only “coloured” city way before the invention of colour itself: Canaletto, Guardi, Bellotto, Tiziano, Giorgione, Bellini, Veronese mastered here the art of perspective painting, and generally speaking ‘invented’ the colours of the lagoon on their canvas. It could not be elsewhere: there is no city in the world where the colour spectrum gives its best reflecting the Venetian palaces on the water of the canals and of the lagoon.
The Carnival of Venice 2013 will be dedicated to the colours because each colour communicates and evokes emotion and to each one of theme we tend to associate a state of mind. The colours are an expression of subjectiveness, and they share with the spirit of Venice Carnival the infinite variety and the numbers of disguises, each one corresponding to our endless different attitudes.
The colour is the result of a chemical and neurological synthesis of perceptual stimuli according to the features of the items over which light is reflected. Our body reacts to the physical nature that surrounds us. Imprisoned within the retina, the sensors of the colours transfer the vision to our brain, reacting to the wave length of a light beam which after having banged on an object or on a person reaches our eye. The colour theories tell us that everything we see descends only in part from its nature (material, surface, etc.).
Most of all, it depends on the way in which we react to the visual stimuli. Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. And so is the Carnival, where a temporary suspension of the roles makes the viewer the final judge of what he sees and the character of the people is based more on the characteristics of the mask he wears than on his real everyday life role. Masking, the symbolic action of Venice Carnival, is the synthesis of this idea.
