About San Marco

San Marco is one of the six districts of Venice, located in the center of the city. Despite being a small district, it is popular among tourists due to its numerous attractions.

The district is famous for Piazza San Marco, often known in English as St. Mark’s Square, which is the principal public square of Venice. It is the only “piazza” in Venice, as the rest of the squares are called “piazzales” or “campos”. The square is home to many of Venice’s most famous landmarks, including St. Mark’s Basilica, St. Mark’s Campanile, the Doge’s Palace, the Museo Correr, and the Torre dell’Orologio. The Columns of Saint Mark and Saint Theodore are also worth mentioning. These two columns, made of granite and marble, were placed near the entrance of the square in 1177.

If you’re looking to do some shopping, there are many brand shops near San Marco Square. Some top gift and specialty shops include The Merchant of Venice, Raggio Veneziano, Le Perle, Vecchia Murano, Cavalier, and Kiriku – a spacious store in the heart of the San Marco district that offers a stylish selection of women’s and children’s fashion. There are also several quality shoe shops near San Marco Square, such as Fratelli Rossetti, Venetia Tod’s, and Carlo Pazolini – located on Via Sestiere San Marco and offering a variety of shoes and leather goods.

Supermarkets can be found in central Venice, such as Punto and Crai – which has a large store on Calle dei Fabbri near Piazza San Marco.

If you’re interested in nightlife, there are several bars and clubs in the San Marco district. One such place is Bacaro Jazz – located in the heart of Venice just a few steps away from the famous Rialto Bridge. It has been a fixture in the city’s bar scene for over a decade and offers excellent cocktails with fantastic jazz music playing in the background. Another option is Tarnowska’s American Bar – which offers a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

If you’re craving pizza, there are several pizzerias in the San Marco district. One such pizzeria is Pizzeria Sansovino – located on Calle Zaguri San Marco and offering a wide selection of pizzas. Another option is Rossopomodoro Venezia San Marco – located on Calle Larga San Marco and offering a variety of Italian dishes including pizza.

Finally, there are two public restrooms in the San Marco district. One is located at San Bartolomeo (Calle de la Bissa 5404) and is open from 9:00 to 20:00. The other is located at Diurno San Marco (Calle dei Preti 1265) and is also open from 9:00 to 20:00. Please note that public restrooms in Venice charge a fee of €1.50.
