Venice is organized into 6 main districts, known as sestieri (singular sestiere) 1. The Grand Canal, which is the city’s main waterway, separates these neighborhoods 2. The six sestieri are:
- Castello: This is the largest district in Venice and is located to the east of the city, extending beyond the Arsenal. It is a mostly residential area with many local shops and markets.
- San Marco: This is the central district of Venice and is home to many of the city’s most famous landmarks, including St. Mark’s Square, St. Mark’s Basilica, and the Doge’s Palace. It is also a popular shopping destination with many high-end stores and boutiques.
- San Polo: This is the smallest district in Venice and is located around the Rialto Bridge. It is known for its lively markets, historic churches, and beautiful palaces.
- Dorsoduro: This district includes the south-west of Venice and the island of Giudecca to the south. It is a popular student area and is home to many art galleries and museums, including the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the Accademia Gallery.
- Cannaregio: This is a large residential area in the north of Venice. It is known for its beautiful canals, historic buildings, and vibrant Jewish Ghetto.
- Santa Croce: This district is located in the western part of Venice and is closest to the bus and taxi arrivals at Piazzale Roma. It is a mostly residential area with many beautiful churches and palaces.
