Cannaregio is the northernmost of the six historic sestieri (districts) of Venice. It is the second-largest sestiere by land area and the largest by population, with 13,169 people as of 2007.
Located just above the Grand Canal, Cannaregio is one of the largest and most populated sestieri in Venice. This authentic and less touristy area has been home to several notable Italians throughout the centuries, including Marco Polo, Titian and Tintoretto.
Some landmarks and visitor attractions in Cannaregio include the Venetian Ghetto, Venezia Santa Lucia railway station, Ponte delle Guglie, Ponte dei Tre Archi, Palazzo Labia, Palazzo Mastelli del Cammello, Palazzo Savorgnan, Ca’ Vendramin Calergi, Ca’ d’Oro, Isola di San Michele, and churches such as Santa Maria di Nazareth (known as Chiesa degli Scalzi), Santa Maria dei Miracoli, Sant’Alvise, San Giovanni Crisostomo, San Geremia, San Canciano, Madonna dell’Orto and Abbazia della Misericordia.
Outside the main tourist path, however, most of Cannaregio is made up of quiet residential streets lined with small cafés and local shops. If you enjoy shopping, Cannaregio offers a variety of options. You can find local shops and bustling morning markets on the quiet residential streets outside Strada Nova. Some of these include Il Forcolaio Matto, Codex Art Gallery, Sogno Veneziano Atelier and Massimiliano Caldarone.
If you’re interested in nightlife, the bars and restaurants in Cannaregio are the perfect place to enjoy authentic local life while immersing yourself in true Venetian culture. Some popular bars and clubs include Time Social Bar, Al Parlamento, The Irish Pub and Irish Pub Santa Lucia.
Finally, public toilets can be found at Santa Lucia Railroad Station and in the San Leonardo area (Campo San Leonardo, Cannaregio 1586), open from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.
